The sleeping berry (Indian ashwagandha) is a plant species from the nightshade family and grows up to 2 m high, has oval leaves and reddish balloon-like flowers.
The cultivation of the plant Ashwagandha is widespread especially in the western areas of India. It is also commonly known as "Indian Ginseng" because Ashwagandha occupies a similar place in Ayurvedic herbal medicine (Dravyaguna) as ginseng in Chinese medicine.
Ashwagandha is one of the most commonly used dietary supplements in Ayurvedic medicine, primarily because of its versatile effects and very good tolerability.
Ashwagandha has a calming effect and promotes a deep, mostly dreamless sleep.
